Sailing stones, also known as sliding rocks or moving rocks, are unique rocks that glide across the surface of dry lake beds, leaving trails behind them. These fascinating stones can be found in locations such as Death Valley in California, Racetrack Playa in Nevada, and Altiplano in Bolivia. The mystery of how these rocks move has puzzled scientists for decades, as no one has ever witnessed the process. The most widely accepted explanation is that thin sheets of ice form on the lake bed during cold nights, and as the sun rises, the wind pushes these ice sheets, causing the rocks to slide across the ground.
